Invitation to attend the 6th Annual Canadian Consortium for Children’s Bone Health Scientific and Educational Meeting

On behalf of the Canadian Consortium for Children’s Bone Health (CCCBH) Annual Meeting Co-Chairs and Planning Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to the Consortium’s 6th Annual Meeting. The meeting will take place on Friday January 29, 2021 from 13:00 to 16:00 EST. While the meeting was originally scheduled to take place in Toronto in February 2021, with the COVID19 pandemic, we have now planned for a virtual event.

This year's CCCBH annual meeting will include symposium-style talks on hot topics in pediatric bone health, clinical case and original research presentations by attendees, and an interactive “case walk-through”. Physicians, scientists, trainees and allied health professionals from all relevant specialties are welcome to attend, such as endocrinology, genetics, neurology, physiotherapy, nursing, and orthopedics.

The theme for this year’s event is “Refining Management Strategies in Pediatric Bone Diseases”. As in the past, attendees will receive 3 CME credits, with the event accredited by the Canadian Society for Endocrinology and Metabolism.

We are pleased to announce that the 2021 Keynote Speaker is Dr. David Weber, Pediatric Endocrinologist and Scientist. Until recently, Dr. Weber was at the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York (https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/people/28999577-david-r-weber), and has since transitioned to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (https://www.chop.edu/doctors/weber-david-r). Dr. Weber is a clinician scientist specializing in pediatric bone health, with a particular interest in pediatric osteoporosis including Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). In 2018, Dr. Weber played a key role in the development of internationally-endorsed guidelines about endocrine and osteoporosis management in DMD. The title of Dr. Weber’s talk is “The Diagnosis and Management of Osteoporosis and Endocrine Complications in Boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD): the 2018 CDC Care Considerations”

In addition, Dr. Melissa Fiscaletti, St. Justine Hospital, Montréal (https://ca.linkedin.com/in/melissa-fiscaletti-8424a0125), will lead the group in an interactive “case walk-through” of a boy with DMD, providing a real-world example of the nuances behind anticipatory guidance, diagnosis, and management of bone fragility and endocrine complications in this context.

The deadline for submission of 300-word interesting cases or original research abstracts for presentation at the meeting is November 1, 2020. Abstracts will undergo a blinded review by national and/or international bone health experts as part of the selection process. Authors of abstracts that are selected for 10-minute oral presentations will be notified by December 2020. Please email your interesting clinical case abstracts and/or original research abstracts to: KidsBonesCanada@cheo.on.ca. You should receive a confirmatory email within one week. If you do not, please email the meeting organizer, Lynn MacLeay, at lmacleay@cheo.on.ca.

The deadline to register your attendance at the meeting is December 1, 2020. To register please email KidsBonesCanada@cheo.on.ca. Following your registration, you will be notified about how to join the virtual meeting.

In other exciting news, the 6th Annual Scientific and Educational Meeting of the CCCBH will serve to kick off the inaugural “CCCBH 2021 Virtual Series”. This Virtual Series will take place every 3 months, targeting a 1.5-hour educational session on Friday afternoons (precise dates and times to be announced at the 6th Annual Scientific and Educational Meeting on January 29, 2021). Our plan at the moment is for the Virtual Series to feature an internationally-renowned speaker on an important clinical topic in pediatric bone disorders, followed by a case presentation and discussion on the same topic by a national faculty member or trainee. Watch for more information on the CCCBH 2021 Virtual Series in the coming months!

Looking forward to seeing you all at these events! If you have any questions, please contact me at Lward@cheo.on.ca.
